Description

This project is about a social innovation by a group of academics with various backgrounds and the Kampung Hilir’s community located in the rural area near the location of the university. The leader for this project is Dr Marzlin Marzuki from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Kedah Branch, Malaysia.

Aim

The aim of this project is to improve the packaging, branding and marketing of the traditional cookies developed by the community that may help to increase the income generation of the community. In particular, the community (low income groups which include single mothers) is able to produce traditional cookies but they need more guidance in terms of packaging, branding, marketing and documenting procedures. As such, the academics team plays a vital role to assist the community by providing the necessary professional knowledge and expertise to achieve the aims of the project.

Results

The community has been given the opportunity to get practical experiences on how to do business and keep accounting records systematically. A few designs for packaging and branding of the traditional cookies to capture the high-end market and low-end market have been successfully established. This project may help solve the community’s issues of poverty andhelp to uplift the current economic state of the community. Besides, this project may benefit other rural communities in other locations by creating self-employment opportunities within a short period of time.
