Bamboo Builder Empower Program 2019

Bamboo Builders is a Singapore-based social enterprise that builds confident leaders to impact their community through entrepreneurship.

They provide customised growth programs, empowering young adults to lead sustainable change better.

They have created 9 rural projects in Vietnam supported by Honda, VNPT, and the Youth Union. In Myanmar, they started an agricultural start-up that is incubated in Phandeeyar, seed funded by VISA and USAID.

Seminar on Design Thinking

TCU SISU Team conducted the seminar on design thinking with a purpose of sharing the design thinking concepts as a problem solving tool in social innovation which is relatively new concept among our societies. The event took place on February 14th 2019 at 10:00 am in the Uttara Hall of the University. Totally 300 participants attended the seminar.

The event was an opportunity for the attendants to share their views on social innovation. On the opening of the event, Rector Prof. Dr. Yi Yi Win (manager of the SISU team) firstly delivered welcoming speech to audiences. Then, Prof. U Aye Kyaw (Founder and Principal of Myanmar Leadership & Management Institute) discussed what the design thinking is, design thinking process and concepts and applications of design thinking in social problem solutions.

At the end of discussion, the attendants asked the questions regarding the design thinking and Prof. U Aye Kyaw explained in more details. After that SISU teams took group photo together with the participants and social innovators. The session was ended at 1:00 pm.

Exploring Maker Fest Myanmar 2019 @ American Center Yangon

TCU SISU Team organized a short visit to explore the Maker Fest Myanmar 2019 at American Center with a purpose of encouraging the students’ creative ideas by observing the innovations of various entrepreneurs and business organization. Here, the innovators use their brains, hands, and heart to make things.

The event took place on February 16th 2019 in Yangon. Before this trip, TCU SISU had delivered the design thinking seminar to arouse the students’ creative ideas in problem solutions. In the seminar, the students mainly focus on theory and in this short visit to Maker Fest the students had studied the innovations in practice by the entrepreneurs and organizations.

During the fest, the SISU users attended the paper craft workshop, robot workshop, robot competition, soldering workshop, Myanmar maker culture talk, 3D printing, origami workshop, 4th industrial revolution talk, bucket weaving. By attending this event, our TCU SISU users have gained many ideas and knowledge and they can participate in the INNO FEST@TCU SISU 2019 which would be held soon.

TCU SISU’s Research Paper Reading on Social Entrepreneur and Social Entrepreneurship

On 30-1-2019, TCU SISU Team conducted the Research Paper Reading on “Social Enterprise and social entrepreneurship” as part of its activities. The main purpose of the event is to share social entrepreneurship research knowledge and ideas to the TCU SISU users (especially final year students who have to make a research). On the opening of the session, Rector Prof. Dr. Yi Yi Win delivered the welcoming speech to the participants. Then, the agenda was started by sharing the research findings of four master students. The following researches are released on the session:
(1) “Social Entrepreneurship and community Development: A Case Study of Recycle Myanmar in Pyay Township” by Ms. Poe Ei Soe

(2) “Effectiveness of Community-Based Tourism, Thalaepyar Village, Kalaw Township” by Ms. Zin Mar Thein

(3) “Analysis on the Motivation, Success Factors and Challenges of Social Entrepreneurs in Yangon City” by Mr. Zin Min Htwe

(4) “Social Entrepreneurial Intentions of Young Entrepreneurs in Yangon Region” by Ms. Thel Hsu Hlaing

At the end of presenting the research papers, the participants and SISU users asked questions and made suggestions on the issues that they are interested. Therefore, the event was the opportunity for the participants to exchange their ideas and views on the research topics presented in this session.
Finally, the session was official closed at 4:00 p.m. and the rector and participants took a group photo together with the researchers.

Enhancing Earning Opportunities of Students while studying

TCU’s SISU and Department of Co-operative Studies organized a programme to enhance the earning opportunities of students while studying. According to programme, the SISU provide the training on making nylon basket which is popular in fashion trends of myanmar female youths, especially for teachers and office employees. In this training, technical assistance is provided by one TCU Alumni, namely Daw Han Ei Zar. Totally, 40 trainees attended the training with keen interest. The training took two days from 28.1.2019 to 29.1.2019. Then,the Closing Ceremony of Making Nylon Basket was held at SISU Classroom, Uttara Estate, on 29.1.2019.

Totally 60 persons including the Rector, Pro-rectors (Academic /Administrative), Professors / Associate Professors (Heads of the Departments), the trainer and trainees attended the ceremony.The training course is very useful, effective and valuable for students, faculty and staff since they can apply the technical-know-how in their daily lives. The product is very marketable in Myanmar, this will contribute to the development of SMEs by the students and staff. It can also be said that “Earning a living while Working” and “Earning a living while Studying” and the trainees actively and willingly learn the ways to produce handmade products.

TCU SISU provides Tailor-made Vocational Training

Under the SEASIN Project, TCU SISU is conducting social innovation activities for rural women who have no regular income. On 9.12.2018, TCU SISU launched a training on tailor-made design and sewing to thirty women from the villages near the university. The training will be ended on 27.1.2019. The purpose of the training is to ensure the rural women’s regular income by creating their own business on sewing in their home. Also, the SISU opens the sewing-machine room for those women to practice to increase their capability. In addition, occasionally TCU SISU invites popular designers from Yangon to TCU SISU to share their success stories and experience to the rural women.
